Accelerated Reader (AR) is an individualized program in which teachers closely monitor students’ reading progress. Students initially take a STAR test to determine their recommended reading level. This level provides teachers with a guideline of books that will challenge students’ reading skills, but will not be too hard for them. Reading goals are set for students based on these reading levels. After reading a book, students take a quiz on the characters and plot of the book. Students accumulate points toward their overall goal for each quiz they pass. Ninety-five percent of the books in the E.L. Miller Elementary Library Media Center collection have Accelerated Reader quizzes.
